Viola Florence (Bontempo) Grieco

Viola Florence (Bontempo) Grieco, 97, of Torrington, CT, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022.

Born December 20, 1924, in Simsbury, CT, the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (Delbertis) Bontempo, Viola graduated from Simsbury High School in 1943, and then worked at the Ensign Bickford Company of Simsbury in the payroll department until her marriage to her beloved husband Thomas W. Grieco.

Together, they established Tommy’s Bicycle Store in Torrington, CT, where they worked side by side until Tom’s passing in 1984. Viola often described those years as the best years of her life. She continued in assisting the operation of the business until her retirement.

In her retirement, she enjoyed traveling afar with her sister Lillian, especially enjoying many Caribbean Cruises. Viola was an avid collector of vintage costume jewelry and antiques and greatly enjoyed the “hunt,” often searching flea markets and antique malls for the next great find.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas W. Grieco, Jr., and his wife Linda of Torrington, CT; John J. Grieco and his wife Deborah of New Hartford, CT; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff at Valerie Manor Nursing Home, especially Claudia (her nurse), as well as both Ashley and Tracy (her caregivers) who became like family to her.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Francis New Cemetery, 863 South Main St., Torrington, CT. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
