Torrington

Ralph J. Sabia, 94, died January 6, 2021, at Farmington Station, in Farmington, CT, which became his home for the past six months.

Ralph was born to Leonard and Angelina (Dallis) Sabia on January 15, 1926, in Torrington, CT. He was a member of the Torrington High School graduating class of 1943, a unique generation who remained in close contact through many reunions. His sportsmanship and athletic skills were recognized by the Torrington Football 29 Club. He was called to serve his country during World War II where he actively served as a Marine in Saipan and Nagasaki. Later he attended and graduated from the Bentley School of Business and Accounting. Ralph demonstrated a strong commitment to his family, community, and church. His work as a young man started at Sabia Food Market, once located on Field Street in Torrington. Throughout his adult life he was associated with Torrington Sash and Door Works. The many customers he serviced brought long lasting friendships as well as treasured memories for him and his family. He was also an independent licensed realtor. For his community, he once served as City Councilman. During the emergency period caused by the flood of 1955, he took on the role of acting Mayor. He passionately participated in the many service activities of the Torrington Chapter of Unico as well as the Holy Name Society of St. Peter Church. He was a member of the Torrington Elks and Torrington Country Club. He initiated the annual dinner to celebrate the observed November 10th Marine Corps Birthday held at the Torrington Elks which continued as a tradition for many years. There were numerous committees and organizations related to the lumber industry in which he also became involved.

The love of his life was his wife, Marion (Smith) Sabia, who passed away in 2012. In addition to his wife, Ralph was predeceased by siblings Dominic Sabia and Rosemarie Burger. He is survived by his daughter, Carla (Sabia) Perlotto and her husband David L. Perlotto, along with two grandsons, Joseph D. Perlotto and Louis C. Perlotto. Other surviving family members are his sister Carol Ann Bozak and brother-in-law Tom Bozak; his sister-in-law Margery Gaudreau and her husband Roland Gaudreau; his brother-in-law Gerald Smith; as well as Margarite Smith, a sister-in-law. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who hold their own very personal memories and entertaining stories.

There are no calling hours and a private burial has been entrusted to Cook Funeral Home.

Ralph truly enjoyed being with people from all “walks of life,” so to honor him, please continue to support your family and community in your own very special way.

His family sincerely extends their appreciation to the staff of Farmington Station as well as Compassus Hospice for the loving and dignified care that he received.
