Barbara (Bruno) Ohotnicky

March 1, 1937 — November 21, 2017

Barbara (Bruno) Ohotnicky, 80, passed away peacefully at Hartford Hospital on November 21, 2017, surrounded by family after a short illness.  A lifelong resident of Torrington, she was born March 1, 1937, to the late John and Helen (Porembjak) Bruno.   Barbara graduated from Torrington High School, class of 1955; Teachers College of Connecticut, class of 1959; and earned advanced degrees from the University of Hartford.  For over 35 years, Barbara served the Torrington Public Schools starting as a classroom teacher at the Migeon Avenue elementary school and retiring from the Guidance Department at the Vogel-Wetmore Middle School.  Barbara was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, Mu chapter, and international honorary organization for women educators.

An active parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church, she was a member and former chairperson of the Parish Council, served on the church school committee, and along with her husband, lead pre-Cana and pre-Baptism classes.  In retirement she remained active by helping to support local blood drives, working the polls on election days, and caring for her grandchildren.  A wonderful wife and mother, the family enjoyed their annual beach vacations, Barbara’s cooking and baking, and watching UCONN women’s basketball.

Barbara is survived  by her husband of 54 years, Richard Ohotnicky; brother John Bruno (wife Barbara); sister-in-law Carolyn Grosso; children Peter Ohotnicky, David Ohotnicky, Susan Ammerman, and John Ohotnicky (wife Julianne); four grandchildren Laura and Matthew Ammerman and Samuel and Anna Ohotnicky; and nieces and a nephew.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 25, 2107, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 160 Main St., Torrington.  Relatives and friends are asked to meet directly at St. Francis Church.  Burial will follow at St. Peter Cemetery.  Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 24, 2017, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home. 82 Litchfield St., Torrington.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Friendly Hands Food Bank, 50 King St., Torrington, CT 06790.  Condolences may be sent to Barbara’s family by visiting www.cookfuneralhomect.com
