Silvio “Sy” G. Florio, 94, of Harwinton, CT, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017, at UCONN Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Ann “Minnie” (Yurgalewicz) Florio who preceded him in death on August 31, 2013.
Sy was born December 31, 1922, in Torrington, CT, son of the late Santo and Severina (Fattori) Florio. He served his country with the U.S. Army from November 3, 1942, and Honorably Dischaged November 6, 1945. Among his battles and campaigns were Ardennes; Central Europe and Northern France; Rhineland. He received the European- African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. A respected builder, he owned Silvio Florio Building Contracting for over 40 years. He was Commander of the Harwinton V.F. W. Sy enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, cooking, and dancing with Minnie, especially to polka music.
He is survived by two sons, Silvio T. Florio (Rosemary LoBrutto) of Norfolk, Steven J. Florio (Lynn) of New Hartford, CT, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Elda Savenella.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 20, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Church, 107 East Main St., Torrington. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery with full military honors accorded. There are no calling hours.
