Michael “Mickey” J. Mazini, 92, of Torrington, CT, passed away unexpectedly on April 21, 2020. Mickey was born May 24, 1927, on Laurel Hill Road in Torrington, and he graduated from Torrington High School. Mickey met his wife Mary (Babiar) at the Fitzgerald Company. He loved baseball and was scheduled to be in minor league baseball camp, but instead enlisted in the Navy during World War II (and never could swim to this day). Upon his honorable discharge, he received the American Theatre Medal and the Victory Medal. He began his career at the Torrington Fire Department as a Call Man, until he became a full-time firefighter and later retired as the Deputy Fire Chief. Mickey worked two jobs all of his life and he instilled those strong work values in his daughter and grandchildren – “work hard and always do the right thing”. When he wasn’t working as a firefighter, he worked at LaPorta Funeral Home, and later became a member of the Cook Funeral Home family. Mickey was passionate about being a firefighter in the community and was well respected by his fellow firemen. Mickey loved gardening both vegetables and flowers. Unselfish by nature, he gave away more than he kept for himself. He had a heart bigger than life and was always there for whoever needed him. With his sarcastic dry sense of humor, he always found humor or greeted people with a smile, even under difficult situations.
Mickey was predeceased by his wife of 25 years, Mary; one brother, Jules Mazini; three sisters, Helen Kaufmann, Loretta Bigliazzi, Marilyn Votraw. He leaves behind with sadness his daughter Mary Ellen Decelles; his grandchildren William (Billy) Crocco and his wife Sue, Michelle Ogle and her husband Matt. Popi will be sadly missed by his cherished great grandchildren, Luca, Juliana, Anthony, Vera and Leo. Mickey also leaves behind his lifetime companion, Barbara Mosimann. A special thank you to Brian, an emergency department staff at CHH who was with Mickey when he passed, and his caregiver, Marguerita Tackie who he loved dearly. The world was a better place with Mickey here with us, but he now is watching over everyone he loved.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2020, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Francis New Cemetery, Torrington. A celebration of Mickey’s life will be held at a later date.
