Michael O. McQuilkin, 66, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Connecticut, surrounded by the family who loved him and never left his side.
Mike was born on November 7, 1959, at the 36th Tactical Hospital in Bitburg, Germany, to Ernest Austin and Mary Elmira McQuilkin, while his family was stationed overseas. An American citizen by birth, Mike later returned to the United States with his family and grew up in Bethel, CT
Mike proudly served in the United States Army before beginning a long career as a hardworking provider. Over the years, he worked at Twin Stampings and later Kimberly Clark, where he earned the respect of coworkers through his dedication, reliability, and ability to tell a good story.
Mike was a man who appreciated the simple things in life, family, good conversation, a few laughs, and doing things his own way. He had a quick wit, a stubborn streak that could rival anyone's, and a sense of humor that could lighten even the toughest days. Whether he was offering advice, sharing a joke, or simply spending time with the people he cared about, Mike had a way of making his presence known.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Mary McQuilkin, and his sister, Nana Humphrey.
He leaves behind his sons, Austin McQuilkin (fiancée, Kayla Damon), and Ryan McQuilkin; his brother, Randy McQuilkin; and his former wife, Barbara McQuilkin, who remained a close and valued part of his life. He also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will miss his stories, humor, and unmistakable personality.
Mike's family finds comfort in knowing that he is finally at peace. While his absence leaves a space that can never truly be filled, the memories, laughter, and lessons he leaves behind will continue to live on in those who knew him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for the compassion and care shown to Mike and his loved ones during his final days.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home in Torrington, Connecticut.
In Mike's honor, share a story, tell a joke, enjoy a good meal with family, or take a moment to appreciate the people you love. He would have preferred that over tears.
