Lidia Bertoldi, 99, passed away peacefully at the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital on October 14, 2026.
Born in West Stockbridge, MA, in 1927, Lidia's Italian heritage was very important to her. Although born in the U. S., her parents were compelled to return to Italy when she was a young child, where they bought a farm. She was raised there, but life was hard, and she returned to her beloved U. S. when she was in her early twenties. She lived with her brother, Irving, in Pittsfield, MA before moving to the Italian immigrant enclave in the West End of Torrington. She was comfortable there with other relatives who had also come from the Veneto Region of Italy. She could communicate with them in her native dialect while she practiced her English and learned to drive. In Torrington, she met and married her husband, Raymond, who predeceased her, and was also a member of this small immigrant community from Northern Italy.
In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her parents, Marcello and Maria (Pieropan) Boscardin and her brothers Irving and Siro.
Lidia worked for many years at the Torrington Company, and after retirement, greatly enjoyed her years working as a seamstress at Jon Marie in downtown Torrington. She moved to the Torringford West Apartments after living in the West End for many years.
Lidia loved to cook, bake, and entertain. She was her happiest when holding court with family and friends around her kitchen table, plying them with course after course of her delicious food. Lidia was an exacting seamstress who could make any garment fit a person perfectly. Her daughter, Deborah, fondly remembers the beautiful dresses she made her as a child which inspired in her a lifelong love of fashion.
Lidia will be most remembered and deeply missed for her uniquely strong and persevering spirit.
She leaves behind three loving children: her devoted son and caregiver of many years, Marshall Bertoldi, and his wife, Patty, of Torrington, CT; her daughter, Deborah DeCoteau and her husband, Nelson, of Providence, RI; her daughter, Patti Avenia and her husband, David, of Wallingford, CT. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Bridget Bertoldi of Auburn, MA, Matthew Avenia, and his wife, Marissa, of Whitman, MA; Allison Avenia and her partner Steve Martucci of Wallingford, CT and Bryan Avenia and his partner, Serena Cosgrove-Hagen, of Wallingford, CT. In addition to these family members, she also leaves behind her cherished great-grandchildren, Michael and Mason Avenia, and one who is on the way who will carry on her name. Lidia is also survived by her nephew, Craig Primiani of Milton, MA and family members in Italy, including her cousins Cristina Gandolfi and Teresa Donato.
