John Viarengo

December 31, 1953 — August 10, 2025

Torrington, Connecticut

With heavy hearts and fond memories, we announce the passing of John Viarengo — beloved husband, devoted father, cherished Papa, loyal brother, favorite uncle, and undisputed champion of eye-rolling dad jokes.

John was a man of many titles, but none more important than the one he held for 45 years: loving husband to Cindy Viarengo. He was famously stubborn, endlessly witty, and a master of one-liners so groan-worthy they became legendary. But beneath the sarcasm and playful teasing, he had a heart overflowing with love for his family. He approached life with grit, humor, and a deep sense of loyalty. If John teased you, you knew you were loved. If you tried to argue with him, you knew you were outmatched. And if you ever needed him, he was there — no questions asked. To his four sons — Chris (Tamera), Jason (Kirsten), Justin (Tiffany), and Nicholas — he was “Grumpy Old Man” and “Oldie Moldy,” a blend of stubbornness, wit, and affection. His grandchildren — Lanaya, Addison, Jamison, Chloe, Ezra, and Niklaus — knew him as Papa, the man who filled Easter eggs with pennies, gave great hugs, and never missed a chance to deliver a perfectly timed joke. John now joins his parents, Louis Secondo Viarengo and Edna Volhardt Viarengo, and his siblings Robert, Glen, Debbie, Al, and Nancy — who surely greeted him with laughter and love.

He leaves behind his brothers Ronald “Bones” Viarengo and Brian (Cindy) Viarengo, his sister Darlene Viarengo, his Aunt Bernadette Pollick, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss his humor, his stories, and his unwavering presence. A Celebration of Life will be announced when the family is ready. In the meantime, we invite you to share your favorite memories of John — the funnier, the better — on this page or on Cindy’s Facebook.

John would have insisted on it. In lieu of flowers, please hug your loved ones, tell a dad joke in his honor, and consider donating to your local animal shelter. John adored his dogs, Lucas and Bella, and believed every pet deserved a loving home.
