John W. Kennedy

April 6, 1929 — January 1, 2017

John W. Kennedy, 87, of Torrington, CT, passed away Sunday, January 1, 2017, at Hartford Hospital.  He was the husband of the late Dolores Crameri  Kennedy and of the late Betty Jo Hendry.

John was born April 6, 1929, in Torrington, CT, son of the late Arnold and Pearl (Colby) Kennedy.  He was employed by Pratt & Whitney as a Machinist until his retirement.   He served his country with the US Army.

He enjoyed bird watching, sketching and painting landscapes which he did until the time of his illness, he collected lighthouses, loved to attend car shows and watching sporting events with his friends.  His favorite meal was breakfast, and he loved a big dish of ice-cream.  His family will remember him for the happy times they spent together, his sense of humor and his strong but loving bear hugs.

He is survived by one son, John Lucian Kennedy and his wife Lisa and one daughter, Ruth Ann Shapiro, both of Torrington, sons-in-law Mark Shapiro of Northfield, Erin McGhee of ME; two step-sons Ted Hendry and his wife Donna of Greenville, SC, Richard Hendry and his wife of LaSalle, IL; nine grandchildren, Sean and Luke Shapiro, Sarah Allen, Amanda and Tamara Kennedy, Meghan Cuatt, Charles Perry, Austin McGhee, Caitrin Abbott; eighteen great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by one daughter, Theresa Lee McGhee.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at 12:30 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington.  Relatives and friends may call on Saturday, January 7th from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12:30 p.m.
