James Patten, 81, of Torrington, CT, passed away on October 8, 2026, after a lengthy battle with dementia. He was born on October 1, 1945, to Margaret (Gentile) and James Patten. Jim lived a full life enjoying the things he loved: family, running, coaching, watching sports, and making trips to Barella’s and the Berkshire for grinders, pizza and a cold beer with friends.
Jim graduated from Torrington High School in 1963 where he started his notable career as a competitive runner. He was equally accomplished academically. He earned both his undergraduate degree in 1967 and later a master’s degree at Central Connecticut State College. Jim was a member of the Blue Devils Cross Country team that won the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) College Division team title in 1964 in the Bronx.
Following college, Jim served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era as a U.S. Army Intelligence Command operative, 6th Military Intelligence Company. Over the years Jim was also a respected authority on the JFK assassination which he researched at length.
Upon returning to Torrington, he became a history teacher at Torrington High School where he continued his commitment to running as a cross country and track coach. His record included leading the track team to a historic Naugatuck Valley League (NVL) Championship title victory over the athletic powerhouse Holy Cross High School. In 2005 he was inducted into the Torrington High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He influenced many students to take the ‘better’ path in life. Over the years, some kept in contact through their college running careers and beyond.
Jim was a lifelong Dodger fan and travelled to attend games around the country. He also enjoyed watching UCONN women’s basketball and WNBA games. He was a founding member of the Torrington Founders Road Race in 1973 which is still held every August. His love of running never wavered; he continued until his illness made it impossible.
Jim is survived by his brother, Michael and many cousins. A graveside funeral service with military honors at New Francis Cemetery will be held on Tuesday, October 20 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions can be sent to Torrington Road Race, P.O. Box 511, Torrington, CT 06790.
