Giovannina "Joann" Nania, 74, of Torrington, CT, passed away on November 30, 2025, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, surrounded by her family. Born on April 14, 1951, Giovannina was the daughter of the late Giuseppe and Teresa (Cristiano) Canino.
Giovannina was employed by the Torrington Company and the Berkshire Pizza. Giovannina was born in Sorbo San Basile, CZ Italy and raised there until the age of 16 before she moved to America with her family. She was an avid cook, a communicant of St. Peter Church, a member of St. Anne’s Society and the Holy Rosary Society and a Eucharistic Minister. She loved to travel to Jerusalem, Italy and throughout the United States and Canada.
Giovannina is survived by her devoted husband, Francesco Nania, and her two sons, Vincenzo Nania and Giuseppe Nania. Along with her three grandchildren, Marissa Nania, Joseph Nania, and Gia Nania. She was the eldest and beloved sister to Benjamin Canino; Frank Canino (Elvira); Serafino "Sal" Canino (Heather); Rosemary Graziano (Frank); Carmela Cavalieri (Giorgio); Delfina Canino McKenna (Christopher); Antoinette Power (Morgan) and Rita Dlugoleski (Michael), along with many cherished nieces and nephews who will carry her memory forward.
In addition to her parents, Giovannina was predeceased by her brother Vincenzo Canino, and her nephew, Vincenzo Graziano.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 5, 2025, at St. Peter Church (St. John Paul the Great Parish) 99 East Main St., Torrington, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a .m. Burial will follow at St. Francis New Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Cook Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting people make a donation to “The Nania Grandchildren College Trust Fund”, 120 Lafayette St., Torrington, CT 06790 towards a scholarship fund for her grandchildren.
