Torrington – Mrs. Caterina (Cristiano) Madia, age 91, of Torrington passed away peacefully on Monday December 8, 2025 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Emilio Madia.
Mrs. Madia was born October 1, 1934 in Sorbo San Basile, Province di Catanzaro, Italy daughter of the late Vittorio and Rosa Maria (Angotti) Cristiano. She worked at the Warrenton Woolen Mill and was a communicant of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Torrington. She enjoyed cooking, knitting, crocheting, and embroidery always making sure that all who came to visit ate and crocheted numerous blankets for her family, friends and caregivers. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend who adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren and had a special Italian song that she sang to them when they came to visit.
Mrs. Madia is survived by her son: Vittorio Madia (Charlotte) of Torrington, her daughters: Maria Garcea of Rochester, NY and Rosa Rinaldi of Newington, her brothers: Rosario Cristiano (Lina) of Torrington and Francesco Cristiano (Joyce) of Dover, DE, her sisters: Maria DeFazio of Italy, Antoinette Sestito of Torrington and Carmela Sanzo of Torrington, her grandchildren: Angelo Rinaldi (Tammy), Carmine Rinaldi (Brittney), Frank Garcea (Kristin), Maricatherine Bernier (Alex), Emily-Catherine Madia and Kenton E. Madia, her great grandchildren: Layla Ann Rinaldi, Gianna Lucia Rinaldi, Baby Rinaldi, Cristiana Blair Bernier, Dino Romeo Bernier and several nieces, nephews and family members in Italy. She was predeceased by her son Carmine Madia, her sister Teresa Canino, her sons in law: Dino Garcea and Joseph Rinaldi, her brothers in law: Giuseppe Canino and Bruno Sestito.
Mrs. Madia’s family would like to thank all of her caregivers for their love, care and support.
Calling Hours will be on Friday December 12, 2025 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home 82 Litchfield St. Torrington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday December 13, 2025 at 9 a.m. at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, St. John Paul the Great Parish, 99 East Main St. Torrington. Burial will follow in New St. Francis Cemetery in Torrington.
