Andrew "Andy" J. Ferencak, Jr.

September 9, 1927 — February 23, 2026

Torrington, Connecticut

Andrew “Andy” J. Ferencak Jr., a member of the Torrington community, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, at the age of 98, after a brief illness. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran.

Born in Torrington, Connecticut, on September 9, 1927, Andy attended Sacred Heart School and the Torrington Trade School. When he was 17, Andy enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and later served in the United States Air Force. During his enlistment, he served as an airplane and engine mechanic and attained the rank of Sergeant. He received the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he received specialized training at the New England Aircraft School, located in East Boston, MA. Andy was truly a pioneer in his field.

After spending time in the Boston area, he returned to Connecticut and worked at Pratt & Whitney in the aircraft wind tunnel. He later worked at the Torrington Company as a machinist for 34 years, retiring in 1989. During his retirement, Andy was constantly active, and could often be found golfing at Greenwoods Country Club, where he was a member for over 50 years. Amazingly, at the time of his 98th birthday, he was still golfing up to three days a week! During the colder months, he enjoyed walking with his friends at the Torrington Armory.

A lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church, Andy was actively involved in the Sacred Heart Holy Name Society. In addition, he also was a member of The St. Joseph Society (Jednota), The American Legion, and the Torrington Lions Club. For many years, Andy worked at the Lions Club booth at the Goshen Fair, shucking and cooking corn.

Andy is survived by his daughter, Nancy, and husband, Jim Barbieri; his granddaughter, Gillian Barbieri, and husband, Brett Otis; and nephew, Mark Fitzgerald. He was predeceased by his wife, Joan (Kost) Ferencak; parents Anna (Smolen) and Andrew Ferencak Sr; and sisters, Mary Ferencak and Ann Ferencak.

The family would like to thank the staff at Torrington Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for providing a comfortable and caring environment during his final days. Andy’s energetic presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 2, 2026, from 9:00 am to 10:30 am at Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield St., Torrington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at St. Peter Church (St. John Paul the Great Parish), 99 East Main St., Torrington.  Burial will follow at St. Francis New Cemetery with full military honors accorded.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Torrington Lions Club Scholarship Fund P.O. Box 81, Torrington, CT 06790.
